My wife’s maternal family.

The photo shows her grandfather, her grandmother, her mother, and her uncles and aunts.

A year after this photo was taken,

the boy with the bow tie died on the front lines, and his mother had died of diphtheria.

The eldest daughter took over her mother’s responsibilities. Perhaps all of them.

A little later, she had an illegitimate child, who was given away immediately after birth and grew up in a home.

The child, a boy, did not reconnect with his mother until he was an adult. Despite his urgent pleas, his mother never told him who his father was.

He died before his mother, who seemed quite unemotional after his death.
